“Sheep Thrills & Muddy Wheels” at the Yolo County Fair

August 15, 16, 17, 18, & 19, 2012

That’s right we’ve been a free gate since 1948.  This makes us the longest running free gate fair in California.  We’re also celebrating our 75th anniversary.  In 1936, the gate cost was .50 for adults and .25 for children.

The Yolo County Fair is very special and will continue to be so.  We celebrate the wonderful contributions that Yolo County residents give back to the county; their talents, their enthusiasm, the things they make, grow, raise, design, and their good will.  This county has a lot of volunteers that have helped this fair maintain it’s free gate status.  Even in this time of economic difficulties, the Yolo County volunteers are here to help put on a great annual “party.”  We need to continue this tradition and show our young people why it’s special to be involved.

For 5 days you can stroll around and visit with your friends and neighbors, maybe even see old friends you haven’t seen in years.  Enjoy the Flower Hall with its beautiful colors and smells of plants and flowers along with creative garden designs that will be the envy of anyone’s back yard.  The Fine Arts Building is a wonderland of photos, paintings, crafts, and hobbies; a tribute to the talented people in our area.  Home Arts is a great place to show off foods, textiles and clothing.  It’s amazing the amount of time and energy that is put into creating terrific jams, jellies, and bake goods.  The textiles are gorgeous enough to hang on any wall.

Agriculture is the main stay of Yolo County and we have hundreds of people showing off their livestock, vegetables and fruit.  We have categories for e products made from the vast variety of produce grown here.  Our fabulous olive oil competition entries along with area wine producers top off the special displays.   The Opening Night Gala has become the “place” to be on Wednesday night.  FFA and 4-H participants, along with adult livestock exhibitors are really excited about showing their animals and telling visitors about their experiences.  This is a great place for kids.

The talented people of Yolo County are here to entertain everyone.  Two stages are busy each day along with our own special event; the Yolo Idol Competition on Thursday event.   The food is outstanding, the rides are a thrill, and you have numerous opportunities to win large stuffed animals.

The Derby is scheduled for Friday and Saturday evening.  This event can’t be missed.  A new Sunday Night Show will be a trip down memory lane with old tractors and other farm equipment.  They will be challenging each other on a variety of competitions which is what they did in 1936 when the Yolo County Fair started.  “My tractor is better than your tractor.”

Come and be a part of celebrating past Fairs and enjoying today’s activities.  It’s because of all the volunteers and community support that we’re still a free gate.  We hope that you come early and come often to ENJOY, our SHEEP THRILLS & MUDDY WHEELS

A way to continue your support and involvement is to join the Yolo County Fair Heritage Foundation.  This non-profit was developed to maintain the traditions of our fair and facility for the betterment of the community.  Ask at the Fair Office on how you can get involved.
