Urban Sherpas

Urban Sherpas

Left to right, Dave Gill, Mike Sheehy, Steve Harris, Clyde Kelly, Brian Barkwill

The Urban Sherpas play a mixture of original contemporary jazz and cover tunes. The band was started by bass player Brian Barkwill and drummer Dave Gill. Their vision was to play original music with an emphasis on groove and melody. They approached songwriter/guitarist Mike Sheehy, and a band was born. Later guitarist/songwriter Steve Harris and keyboardist/songwriter Clyde Kelly were asked to bring add their talents to the group.

The Sherpas’ music started with songs written on classical guitar by Sheehy with bossa and samba influences. As the songs were adapted to a full band, they became melodic contemporary music spiced up by wonderful electric guitar playing by Harris and Sheehy. Kelly, Barkwill, and Gill provide a solid groove and creative rhythmic foundation. The band is adding tunes written by Harris and Kelly. The covers range from Los Lonely boys to Norah Jones

The members met in a variety of ways. Gill and Harris had played in church together for about a year before Harris realized that they had met before in Gill’s recording studio (Samurai Sound Lab) some 20 years prior! Barkwill and Sheehy had regularly played together in a church setting in Woodland, while Gill and Kelly met through their sons’ musical endeavors. All of the members play regularly in their local churches, frequently sitting in with one another.
