Woodland Community Band
The band was started in September of 2005 by Bobby Rogers as a way to give members of the community an opportunity to share music. This was suggested by Bobby’s friend and colleague, Rick Stout and made possible by Susan Moylan at Adult Education. The band plays a variety of music including Broadway tunes and movie themes, with music from the James Bond movies, Pirates of the Caribbean and the musical Grease. The program also includes popular classics and rounds out the program with patriotic melodies and favorite marches such as ‘Stars and Stripes Forever.’ The band covers a broad age group including students from middle school to retired local residents who had put their instruments away decades ago. Woodland resident Ramona (Thiers) Rich said, “I attended one of the concerts and went out and bought a saxophone. I hadn’t played in decades, but it’s surprising how rapidly it comes back to you … like riding a bicycle.” Her Woodland High School schoolmate Bill Hollingshead is also playing clarinet after 40 years. Bobby Rogers is also a product of the Woodland school system, starting on clarinet at age nine. He was Drum Major in marching bands at both Douglass and WoodlandHigh schools. Upon completing his college and teaching education, he returned to Woodland. Bobby said, “I gained so much from the Woodland schools, I wanted return and give back to the young people of the community. Now I can also do the same for the adults.” |
